Pediatric & Childrens Dental Services

At the Center for Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Columbus, Ohio we enjoy treating children and look forward to seeing a child as young as three. The sooner they come in for a dental appointment, the better their dental health will be as they grow into adulthood. With young children, during the first visit, we recommend the child sit on your lap and not have any treatment. It can be exciting enough just to be in the dental office, see all the equipment, and meet the doctor and staff for the first time. By using this approach, we have found that children are less anxious of going to the dentist, and even look forward to the next visit. In addition to treating cavities, Dr. Firouzian and his dental staff in Columbus, Ohio also provide orthodontic treatment for children, as well as mouth guards and sealants.

Mouth guards
Dr. Firouzian in Columbus, Ohio can create a custom-fabricated sports mouth guard for your child. According to the American Dental Association, more than 200,000 oral injuries are prevented annually in this country by sports mouth guards. Oral trauma can happen to children, as well as high school and college level athletes. It's a fact that dental injuries are the most common type of orofacial injury sustained during participation in sports.

Sealants
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings, which are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent decay. Most tooth decay in children and adolescents occurs on the chewing surfaces of these back teeth or molars. That is because molars have irregular surfaces with pits and grooves, which tend to trap food and bacteria. Sealants flow into and coat these pits and grooves so that bacteria cannot penetrate and cause decay.

The teeth most likely to benefit from sealant application are the first and second molars just after they have erupted and before they have had a chance to decay. Children between the ages of 5 and 14 benefit most from sealants. A sealant application can last for as long as five years and often longer.
